It is with great sadness we report that George Smith passed away in the early hours on Sunday 9th March 2014. George was a very accomplished musician who made a massive contribution to the music scene in Cornwall both as a performer, music leader and educator.
Holman-Climax Male Voice Choir were very fortunate to appoint George as their Musical Director in 1972 when the great Edgar Kessell retired. During his time at Holman-Climax, the choir flourished and further built on the already impressive reputation it had earned. Under George’s direction the Choir achieved many successes in both local and national festivals, made regular appearances on radio and television and also made several iconic recordings.
George retired from the choir in 1990 due to ill health, having held the reigns for an impressive 18 years and was appointed Honorary Life President in recognition of the tremendous contribution he had made to the life and success of the Choir.
